The seaside settlement that hosts Kythnos Bay Hotel owes its name to its thermal springs. Although Kythnos (or Thermia, due to its thermal springs) is one of the closest Cycladic Islands from Attica, it remains one of the most unknown corners of the Aegean. In its northern part there are Merichas, the port of the island, Chora the capital, Loutra and Dryopida. The southern part of Kythnos is almost uninhabited, except from the area of Panagia Kanala and the small bay of Agios Dimitrios.
The island has 100 beaches of which 65 are famous sandy beaches. The landscape is completely Cycladic, with hills, 350 white picturesque chapels spreaded out throughout the island, while the villages are full of paved streets, white houses, squares, churches and windmills. Τhe island was inhabited in the 10th century from Dryopes, inhabitants of Evia, while it prospered in antiquity and contributed a trireme to the naval battle of Salamis. The island passed to the Venetians in 1204, then to the Turks and finally joined the newly formed Greek state in 1830.
